The Rhine is indisputably the number one European commercial river. 300 million tons of goods transit on it every year, watched by pleasure sailors who slip in between as they can. In Strasbourg, there is an atmosphere of lively river traffic, and at Breisach, on the German bank, this is the area of pleasure-boating activities. The locks at Kembs, 16 km from Basel, are remarkable.
